17Tech publishes guidelines for defense accelerator mentorship
Technology firm 17Tech has released 17 rules for mentoring startups in the defense sector, emphasizing clarity and real-world needs.

Helsinki-based technology firm 17Tech on Monday published guidelines for mentors working with defense innovation. The release, titled "17 Rules for Being a Great Mentor in a Defense Accelerator," focuses on supporting startups within defense sector incubators.
The guidance stresses that effective defense sector mentorship requires commitment and an understanding of industry specifics, such as higher stakes and fewer customers compared to commercial tech. 17Tech highlights the role of mentors in guiding through sharp questions and evidence, rather than direct steering.
The firm emphasizes the importance of field data in mentorship, pushing companies to validate solutions based on actual user needs, not just assumptions or intuition. "Don’t overtrust your intuition," the publication states, urging teams to repeatedly revalidate both problems and solutions.
The release outlines mentorship goals including ensuring product-mission fit and prioritizing learning over scaling. The approach should be realistic yet optimistic, focusing on companies' ability to iterate rapidly under real conditions. According to Antti Kosunen, Founding Partner at 17Tech, mentors should serve the mission, as defense sector companies are building national resilience, not just businesses.
