20% of German SMEs Use Artificial Intelligence
KfW Research reports that 20% of German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) currently utilize artificial intelligence (AI). The most common applications are easily manageable technologies like natural language generation and text recognition.

Frankfurt – Twenty percent of Germany's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are currently using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to an analysis by KfW Research published on July 29, 2026. The study found that the most widespread AI applications are those that are relatively easy to implement and have broad usability.
Specifically, 14% of SMEs employ AI for natural language generation, and 10% use it for text recognition. More complex AI technologies, such as data analytics (used by 3% of SMEs) and AI for autonomous machine movement (used by 1%), are adopted significantly less frequently.
The research indicates that a company's level of digitalization, existing digital expertise, and overall innovativeness are key factors influencing AI adoption. Furthermore, integrating external sources for idea generation and project implementation also appears to facilitate AI usage.
The findings highlight a clear trend towards simpler, more accessible AI tools within the SME sector in Germany. The analysis provides insights into the current adoption patterns and influencing factors for AI technologies in this business segment.
