20,000 Pigs Dead After Large Fire: Residents Fear Disease and Odor

Over twenty thousand pigs have died following a large fire at a pig farming facility in Düben, near Coswig, more than a week ago. The affected facility remains partially destroyed, with the animal carcasses still present, leading to significant odor problems and concerns about potential disease outbreaks among local residents. Measures have been taken to cover the carcasses with lime in an attempt to mitigate risks.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and investigators have not yet been able to access the burnt-out facility due to safety concerns. The disposal of up to 20,000 animal carcasses requires specialized transport and extensive logistical planning. The estimated material damage is approximately nine million euros.

According to official statements, the majority of the animals that perished were piglets and young pigs, though 1,700 sows also died. Around 1,300 sows were rescued. A specialized company is expected to be involved in the removal of the deceased animals due to potential contamination with hazardous substances.

The facility has faced criticism from environmental and animal welfare organizations for years regarding its practices and environmental impact. These groups have previously opposed and legally challenged the facility's expansion plans.
