2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Features Larger Battery for All-Electric Daily Driving
Toyota's popular RAV4 SUV will see its entire 2026 model line electrified. A new plug-in hybrid variant is introduced with significant upgrades, including a larger battery designed for all-electric daily commutes.

Toyota is updating its best-selling RAV4 SUV for the 2026 model year, electrifying the entire lineup. A key development is the introduction of a significantly improved plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, featuring a new powertrain and a larger battery capacity.
The 2026 RAV4 PHEV is engineered to enable all-electric driving for typical daily commutes and shorter trips. This enhancement is primarily due to the substantial increase in battery size, aiming to reduce reliance on the gasoline engine.
Under the hood, the PHEV model is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that produces 186 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with electric motors and Toyota's electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.
While the PHEV focuses on extended electric range, the broader 2026 RAV4 lineup will also incorporate hybrid powertrains that recharge batteries via regenerative braking and engine operation, continuing Toyota's established hybrid strategy. This move underscores Toyota's commitment to electrification across its vehicle range.
