263 Bavarian Daycare Centers Recognized for Sustainability Education

BAVARIA – The Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern (LBV), in cooperation with the Bavarian Ministry for Environment and Consumer Protection, has awarded the 'ÖkoKids' distinction to 263 daycare centers for their work in promoting sustainability. The award, now in its 16th year, recognizes institutions that integrate environmental education into their curriculum.

LBV Chairman Dr. Norbert Schäffer and Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber attended a ceremony at the hippo campus Zunftstraße daycare in Haar, near Munich. This particular center received the award for the fifth time, with children presenting their project on local bird species. In total, 263 daycare facilities are receiving the title this year.

Further award ceremonies will take place in Munich on November 12 for facilities in southern Bavaria, and in Nuremberg on November 23 for those in northern Bavaria. The program aims to teach children environmental awareness, including waste reduction, nature conservation, and healthy eating habits.

Michaela Oertel, director of hippo campus Zunftstraße, highlighted the importance of embedding environmental awareness into daily routines and noted that children share their learning with their families. "The ÖkoKids projects allow children to learn much that is new and promote exchange and cooperation with families," Oertel stated.

The LBV and the ministry emphasize the significance of sustainability in early education and acknowledge the dedication of staff, parents, and the community. The increasing number of participating centers underscores the program's ongoing relevance and popularity in environmental pedagogy.
