2,977 drones create 9/11 memorial in New York Harbor
To commemorate the 2,977 victims of the 9/11 attacks, 2,977 drones formed a memorial in New York Harbor, recreating the original architectural scale of the World Trade Center.
A drone show featuring 2,977 drones was held in New York Harbor on September 9 to commemorate the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks. The installation, titled "2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor," aimed to recreate the original architectural scale of the World Trade Center, designed by Minoru Yamasaki.
The project involved extensive planning and coordination with numerous agencies. A significant challenge was securing a suitable launch site, requiring approximately 12,000 square feet of flat, open ground. Texas-based Sky Elements Drones produced the event in collaboration with creative director Addison Mehr and other artistic advisors. The U.S. Coast Guard ultimately permitted the use of a parking lot at its recruitment office on the southern tip of Manhattan as the staging area.
To execute the show, flight restrictions and ground security measures were necessary, leading to the decision to hold it over the waterfront rather than at the original World Trade Center site. The precise number of drones, 2,977, was a deliberate choice to represent each individual life lost. The drones initially appeared as two upward-swirling helixes before slowly reconfiguring into the shape of the Twin Towers.
This one-night event was intended to create a reverent and poignant remembrance. While drone shows are commonly used for advertising and entertainment, this installation focused on respectfully commemorating a significant historical tragedy and honoring its victims.
