In 2025, 36 new medications were introduced to the German healthcare system, marking a significant year for patient treatment options according to the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (vfa). The new drugs address a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer's disease and cancer.

A total of 36 new medications were brought into the German healthcare system in 2025, according to a review by the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (vfa). The organization stated that these new preparations offer good news for individuals with conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and cancer, while also suggesting that the number of new introductions could have been higher.
The year saw a breakthrough in Alzheimer's disease treatment with the availability of two new drugs, ending a 23-year period without new therapeutic options. These medications are intended for early stages and require thorough diagnostic methods, including genetic testing. Among the more "unusual" treatments were two gene therapies: one for sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia utilizing CRISPR-Cas technology therapeutically, and a gel for treating the severe skin condition Epidermolysis bullosa.
Furthermore, six new drugs for metabolic diseases were introduced, including the first treatment for MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis), an advanced form of fatty liver disease. In the oncology sector, 13 new drugs were launched, including oral kinase inhibitors and antibody-drug conjugates for breast and cervical cancer.
The list of new drugs covers a broad spectrum of therapeutic areas, including neurological, immunological, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases. In addition to the 36 new medications, vfa noted that at least 20 expanded indications for existing drugs were approved. The association expressed a sentiment that more drugs could have been ready for introduction in the German market.
