5 migrates to AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2
UK broadcaster 5 has migrated to AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 to streamline its video delivery chain and improve operational efficiency.

5, part of Paramount and one of the UK's largest free-to-air broadcasters, has migrated its video packaging operations to AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2. This move aims to simplify the company's multi-platform content delivery for simulcast and free ad-supported television (FAST) channels.
Previously, 5 operated a dual pipeline system for video packaging: a third-party packager for DVB-DASH delivery and AWS Elemental MediaPackage v1 for MPEG-DASH and HLS. This setup required duplicated encoding resources and manual failover mechanisms, leading to increased operational overhead and reduced resilience.
The impending end-of-life for AWS Elemental MediaStore in November 2025 was a significant driver for the migration to MediaPackage v2. The new solution integrates packaging and origin server functionalities, reducing infrastructure footprint and enhancing operational efficiency. This consolidated approach also facilitates seamless integration of new capabilities, such as DVB-DASH compliance.
The migration allows 5 to more effectively deliver content across platforms including Freely, Freeview Play, and web browsers, while reducing operational complexity and infrastructure costs. AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 provides a scalable and flexible solution for modern video service demands.
