A new reputation index by 5W AI Communications highlights a notable disparity in public perception among leading AI company founders. The index found a significant difference in reputation scores, with a gap of up to 22 points.
MIAMI – 5W AI Communications has released the inaugural edition of its 5W Reputation Index, assessing the public standing of three prominent AI laboratory founders. The July 2026 report reveals substantial differences in reputation, even among leaders in the same frontier technology sector.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis scored highest with 86 points, followed by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at 82. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman received the lowest score in the cohort, with 64 points. The report attributes Hassabis's strong ranking to his deep academic credentials and foundational AI achievements like AlphaGo and AlphaFold. Amodei's reputation is bolstered by his academic background and focus on AI safety.
Altman's lower score is significantly influenced by the November 2023 board controversy, which the report states continues to heavily impact trust-related search queries 30 months later. This suggests that board-level disruptions can create lasting challenges for an individual's public image, overshadowing other accomplishments.
The research underscores a key finding: a company's reputation and its founder's personal reputation can be distinct and even move in opposite directions. While OpenAI leads in industry visibility, its founder's personal reputation score lagged. Ronn Torossian, founder of 5W AI Communications, noted that credentialed sources and controlled messaging are more impactful for reputation management than sheer fame, emphasizing the need for strategic communication.
