61 Percent of Toxic Coworkers Face No Consequences, GCheck Study Finds

A significant majority of employees who have encountered toxic behavior in their workplace do not see perpetrators held accountable, according to a new survey by GCheck. Of the 1,500 individuals surveyed, 85 percent reported having worked closely with a colleague whose behavior consistently made work life worse. Despite this, 61 percent stated that perpetrators never faced consequences, and 23 percent of these problematic employees were even rewarded, promoted, or protected.

This inaction is not limited to junior staff. When managers were reported for toxic behavior, 36 percent were either protected from sanctions or rewarded, with only 21 percent being fired or eased out. In contrast, when similar accusations were leveled against junior colleagues, 24 percent were protected, and 41 percent were removed.

Ironically, this hierarchical bias may partially explain the extent of the problem. Survey respondents indicated that nearly half of all toxic behavior came from coworkers, with only 10 percent originating from superiors.

GCheck founder Houman Akhavan stated in a report that despite years of promises and policies to address toxic behavior, the reality is that enforcement has become tougher on everyone except those causing the problem. Companies continue to fail to crack down on workplace bullies, leading to widespread negativity and increased costs related to turnover and replacement.
