8 criminal groups arrested for defrauding e-commerce platforms with counterfeit shoes
Chinese authorities have arrested over 20 individuals from eight criminal groups who exploited e-commerce return policies. The total value of the fraud is estimated at over 2 million yuan.

Chinese police have dismantled eight criminal groups accused of defrauding e-commerce platforms by exploiting "no-questions-asked" return policies. More than 20 individuals have been arrested in connection with the scheme, which reportedly involved over 2 million yuan (approximately $275,000 USD) in fraudulent transactions.
The investigation began when a quality inspector at an online retailer noticed discrepancies in a returned pair of athletic shoes. Further scrutiny revealed a sophisticated operation involving multiple individuals.
The groups allegedly purchased genuine athletic shoes from various e-commerce sites. After receiving the authentic items, they would return counterfeit versions, often of lower quality, by leveraging the platforms' lenient return policies. The genuine shoes were then resold for profit.
Many of the arrested individuals, primarily in their 20s and 30s, reportedly believed they were merely exploiting loopholes in the system rather than committing fraud. They are said to have anticipated merely repaying the difference if caught, rather than facing criminal charges.
