83% of Consumers Unable to Identify AI-Generated Ads
A study by The COOL Company found that 83% of consumers could not distinguish AI-generated ad imagery from human-created work. The findings highlight the increasing sophistication of AI in advertising.

The COOL Company, an advertising platform, conducted a challenge to test consumers' ability to identify AI-generated advertisements. In a study involving over 500 participants, 83% failed to correctly identify AI-created imagery, indicating a significant advancement in AI's visual generation capabilities.
The challenge presented participants with ten ad options, one of which was AI-generated. Only 17% of individuals were able to pinpoint the AI advertisement. Interestingly, while half of the participants initially felt confident in their ability to spot AI content, this confidence diminished after completing the test.
Beyond identification, the study surveyed consumer attitudes toward AI in advertising. 73% of respondents prioritized an ad's relevance and content over its production method. However, awareness of AI creation did impact trust: 40% stated it would lower their trust in a brand, while another 40% reported no change.
Approximately 73% of consumers believe AI-generated advertising is already indistinguishable from human-made creative, or will be within a year. Zack Dugow, founder and CEO of The COOL Company, stated that the results reflect a cultural shift. "The opportunity is to use intelligence across creative, media, and measurement to make advertising work better for consumers and drive the ultimate performance for marketers," Dugow said.
