Aalto University Features Koite Health's Research on Light-Based Oral Care
Aalto University News has highlighted Koite Health's research into a light-activated mouthwash technology designed to eradicate harmful bacteria on teeth.

Aalto University News has published an article detailing research from health tech company Koite Health, focusing on a light-based technology for combating oral bacteria. The feature explores the scientific underpinnings of the method and includes interviews with its developers, pediatric cardiac surgeon Tommi Pätilä and Koite Health CEO Sakari Nikinmaa.
The technology stems from initial research originating in a Biodesign project at Aalto University. Marketed as Lumoral, the method aims to neutralize bacterial plaque that regular brushing may not fully remove. Nikinmaa anticipates the innovation will particularly benefit individuals with diabetes and those undergoing cancer treatments where oral health issues can arise.
The article also addresses the broader connection between oral health and chronic diseases. Undetected infections in the mouth can contribute to serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lung cancer, and may elevate the risk of premature birth in pregnant women.
Koite Health's technology targets microscopic plaque, which is often difficult to eliminate through conventional means. The research aims to provide a novel approach to maintaining oral hygiene, with ongoing studies planned to further investigate its clinical impact.
