As electrification accelerates and renewables increase their share of global power generation, energy systems are becoming more complex. This drives demand for flexible, decentralized energy resources that require deep technical, financial, and environmental analysis.

ABB has made a strategic minority investment in UK-based startup Gridcog, aiming to enhance advanced modeling capabilities for renewable energy, energy storage, industrial microgrids, and energy-as-a-service solutions. This collaboration will allow ABB's customers to design, compare, and validate complex energy projects faster, with clear visibility into both financial performance and carbon impact from the initial stages.

Gridcog's software platform enables rapid scenario modeling, design, and simulation, supporting the creation of more consistent and transparent business cases for renewable energy and energy transition projects. The platform helps quantify financial performance and carbon emissions, assisting commercial and industrial customers in developing data-driven net-zero roadmaps.

"By combining Gridcog's modeling capabilities with our energy advisory and microgrid engineering expertise, we can help customers move faster from concept to implementation," said Stuart Thompson, President of ABB's Electrification Service division. The partnership strengthens ABB's ability to integrate software, hardware, and services into more comprehensive "as-a-service" offerings, particularly for commercial and industrial clients.

ABB is leading the funding round, joined by AXPO, DNV, and Verbund Ventures. ABB's venture capital arm, ABB Electrification Ventures, has invested over $110 million in 16 startups since 2021. The total investment in startups through ABB Ventures since its 2010 inception is approximately $500 million.
