Abbott Addresses Global Malnutrition Crisis
Abbott Laboratories highlights the need for collaboration to combat global malnutrition, a problem affecting billions and manifesting in various forms, including stunting, underweight, wasting, and obesity.

Abbott Laboratories has shed light on the widespread issue of global malnutrition, a complex challenge impacting billions of people worldwide, encompassing both children and adults. The company emphasizes that malnutrition is not solely a problem of extreme poverty, but manifests in diverse forms such as stunting (low height for age), underweight, wasting (low weight for height), and overweight or obesity.
Globally, the prevalence of malnutrition varies significantly by region. Africa is experiencing a rapid increase in undernourishment, while Southeast Asia and Latin America, despite progress in reducing stunting and wasting, are seeing rising obesity rates. In Europe and the United States, obesity has become a significant public health concern, with millions affected.
Increasing incomes and urbanization in many countries lead to a "double burden of malnutrition," where both undernutrition and rising obesity coexist. The economic impact is substantial, with estimates suggesting malnutrition costs the global economy up to $3.5 trillion annually, hindering social and economic development.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing malnutrition challenges by disrupting food supply chains and economic stability. It is estimated that the pandemic could lead to an additional 83 to 132 million people facing undernourishment globally. Abbott stresses that addressing this pervasive issue requires a collaborative effort involving governments, non-profit organizations, and private sector entities.
