Abbott Addresses Infant Formula Questions

Washington D.C. – Abbott Laboratories, a major player in infant nutrition, has issued a statement addressing common questions about infant formula. This comes as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiates a process to review the nutrient composition of infant formulas.

Abbott emphasizes that breast milk remains the optimal source of nutrition for infants, providing a comprehensive range of nutrients and immunological benefits. However, the company acknowledges the necessity of safe infant formulas for families unable or choosing not to breastfeed.

The company clarifies that modern infant formulas are scientifically formulated foods designed for infants in their first year of life. These products are made to mimic breast milk and are strictly regulated by the FDA regarding their composition, testing, packaging, labeling, and manufacturing processes.

Abbott produces both routine formulas for healthy, full-term infants and specialized formulas for those with specific needs, such as digestive sensitivities or allergies. For its standard formulas, the company utilizes lactose, derived from cow's milk, as a primary carbohydrate source to closely replicate breast milk's nutritional profile.
