Abbott and ADA Partner to Improve Diabetes Care in Underserved Communities
Abbott Laboratories and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) are collaborating to enhance diabetes care in communities disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The partnership aims to address health disparities.

Abbott Laboratories and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have partnered to address challenges in diabetes care within underserved and low-income communities, particularly those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative seeks to improve access to essential diabetes management tools and support.
The pandemic has exacerbated existing difficulties for individuals with diabetes, leading some to face difficult choices between food, medication, and supplies. Abbott has committed $5 million over three years to support the ADA's "Health Equity Now" initiative, which focuses on reducing health disparities in diabetes care.
Abbott highlights its commitment to making advanced diabetes technology, such as its FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring system, more accessible and affordable. The company states that its products are designed with affordability and ease of use in mind to benefit a broader population.
"Like the ADA, we believe that access to breakthrough technologies should not be out of the reach of people who can benefit from it the most," said Jared Watkin, senior vice president of Diabetes Care at Abbott. ADA CEO Tracey Brown previously noted that 40% of COVID-19 deaths occurred in people with diabetes, and many have delayed care due to financial hardships.
This collaboration is expected to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities for individuals managing diabetes in vulnerable populations, addressing critical needs exacerbated by the recent global health crisis.
