Abbott Clarifies Differences Between Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease

Abbott Laboratories has clarified key distinctions between essential tremor and Parkinson's disease, two neurological conditions that can present with similar symptoms. The company emphasizes that while both disorders cause involuntary shaking, their underlying mechanisms, presentation, and associated symptoms differ markedly.

Essential tremor is the most common type of tremor, typically beginning in the hands and arms as a mild, high-frequency shaking that may worsen with age and affect the head or voice. It is not life-threatening, though severe cases can be disabling. While the exact cause is unknown, genetics may play a role, with onset most common after age 40.

Parkinson's disease occurs when brain nerve cells produce insufficient dopamine, leading to progressive disability. Characteristically, Parkinson's tremors are often more forceful, lower-frequency, and may begin on one side of the body. Additional symptoms such as body stiffness, slowed movements, and balance issues are common in Parkinson's, unlike essential tremor.

A significant differentiator highlighted by Abbott is the timing of the tremor: essential tremor is typically more pronounced during action, whereas Parkinson's tremors are often most noticeable at rest. Parkinson's disease can also shorten life expectancy, a factor not associated with essential tremor.

Abbott stresses the importance of accurate diagnosis for appropriate treatment. Management options for tremors may include medication, physical therapy, and deep brain stimulation, depending on severity. The company advises seeking medical evaluation for any worsening tremor.
