Abbott Develops Tests for Early HIV Detection

Abbott Laboratories is advancing HIV detection with its newly developed diagnostic tools. These tests can identify HIV by detecting both antigens and antibodies, potentially shortening the detection window by up to 20 days compared to conventional antibody-only methods.

Early identification of acute HIV, a highly infectious stage of the disease, is critical as it often goes undetected. An estimated 5,000 to 75,000 patients are misdiagnosed annually. Furthermore, one in seven individuals with HIV are unaware of their status, contributing to further transmission.

The new tests are designed to expedite diagnosis and provide crucial information for healthcare professionals to formulate treatment plans. Prompt detection of infection allows for timely initiation of treatment and helps prevent additional cases. Abbott emphasizes that scientific advancement is key to addressing the challenges posed by rapidly evolving viruses like HIV.

According to recent data, nearly 40,000 new HIV diagnoses occurred in the U.S. in 2016. Abbott's technology is intended to support public health efforts in staying ahead of HIV through enhanced diagnostics and prevention strategies.
