Abbott Expands Remote Monitoring in Medical Devices

Abbott Laboratories is enhancing its medical device offerings by integrating Bluetooth capabilities, enabling real-time data transmission from patient devices to healthcare providers.

The company's Confirm Rx implantable cardiac monitor, for example, tracks irregular heart rhythms and transmits data wirelessly to a smartphone, allowing continuous monitoring regardless of location. This advancement aims to improve patient freedom and provide doctors with up-to-date information for effective care management.

Beyond cardiovascular technology, Abbott applies similar "sync-and-send" functionality to its FreeStyle Libre portfolio for diabetes management. These glucose monitoring devices transmit data to a mobile app, which can then be shared with physicians, offering insights into glucose patterns and trends.

Abbott is also pursuing future integrations with other health technology partners, including insulin pen manufacturers and digital coaching platforms. These collaborations are expected to create more seamless data streams and actionable health insights for both patients and their clinicians.
