Abbott Extends Shelf Life for BinaxNOW COVID-19 Tests, Confirms Efficacy Against Variants

Abbott Laboratories announced an extension for the expiration dates of its BinaxNOW COVID-19 Self Tests, raising the shelf life from 15 months to 22 months following clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This update allows consumers to rely on existing test kits for longer periods.

Consumers can verify the new expiration dates by checking the lot number and expiration date printed on the back of the test box. The FDA also maintains a list on its website of all at-home COVID-19 tests with extended expiration dates, providing a resource for users to confirm their test kit's validity.

In addition to the extended shelf life, Abbott confirmed its BinaxNOW tests remain effective in detecting current SARS-CoV-2 variants, including the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, commonly referred to as "Kraken." Researchers at Abbott have verified that the tests' detection method does not rely on the virus's spike protein, ensuring continued accuracy against evolving strains.

The company also provided updated guidance on testing frequency. Frequent testing, particularly when exposure is uncertain, increases the likelihood of detecting the virus. For individuals with symptoms, repeat testing with at least 48 hours between tests is recommended if the initial result is negative. Asymptomatic individuals should conduct at least three tests over five days with 48-hour intervals if they suspect exposure.
