Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP, a law firm, is investigating a data breach that allegedly exposed sensitive information of patients associated with Abbott Laboratories and its subsidiary, Exact Sciences Corporation. The incident impacts two significant companies in the healthcare technology sector.
The breach reportedly occurred in July 2026, when an unauthorized third party gained access to Exact Sciences' legacy cancer diagnostics systems. The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility, alleging the exfiltration of names, contact information, dates of birth, and up to one million Social Security numbers. Neither Abbott nor Exact Sciences have yet confirmed the extent of the data compromised.
The law firm also highlighted that neither Abbott nor Exact Sciences have initiated notification to affected individuals. This delay may potentially violate state and federal laws mandating timely disclosure of data breaches to those impacted.
Individuals whose personal information may have been compromised face potential risks of identity theft and other privacy violations. The law firm suggests that affected parties may be entitled to damages and may seek injunctions for improved cybersecurity practices by the companies.
