Abbott Laboratories Explains Electrolyte Importance for Athletes

US-based health company Abbott Laboratories has issued guidance for athletes on understanding and utilizing electrolytes. The information emphasizes that electrolytes are crucial for maintaining fluid balance and for nerve and muscle function, particularly during prolonged or hot exercise.

Pam Nisevich Bede, a leading expert in Abbott's nutrition business, explains that the body loses significant amounts of sodium, potassium, and chloride through sweat. As levels of these electrolytes decrease, performance can suffer, hydration becomes compromised, and fatigue can increase. Sodium, in particular, is vital for fluid regulation and cellular communication, making its adequate intake during exercise essential.

Potassium works in conjunction with sodium to maintain fluid balance, blood pressure, and cellular activity. While sports drinks and electrolyte beverages are good sources, Bede also points to natural sources like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Calcium and magnesium, which support muscle contraction and nerve transmission, are lost in smaller amounts, but their replenishment is also important.

The guidance also introduces the "sweat test," which involves monitoring weight before and after exercise. The goal is to lose no more than 1 percent of body weight. Losing more weight indicates fluid and electrolyte loss that should be replaced with adequate intake of fluids and electrolytes. Each kilogram lost corresponds to approximately 0.5 liters of fluid that should be replaced post-exercise with an electrolyte-containing beverage.
