Abbott Opens New Facility to Meet Diabetes Technology Demand
Abbott Laboratories has opened a new 323,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Kilkenny, Ireland, to address growing global demand for its continuous glucose monitoring systems.

Abbott Laboratories has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Kilkenny, Ireland, to expand production capacity for its diabetes management technologies.
The 323,000-square-foot site will focus on producing sensors for the FreeStyle Libre 3 system, a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device. Abbott stated the facility will have the highest production output of FreeStyle Libre sensors globally.
The expansion comes as Abbott aims to capture a larger share of the growing CGM market, which CEO Robert Ford has described as a "mass market opportunity." The company projects FreeStyle Libre sales to exceed $6 billion this year. Abbott's Diabetes Care business saw 19% organic sales growth in the first nine months of 2024.
The new Kilkenny facility is expected to create over 800 jobs. Abbott has had a presence in Ireland for nearly 80 years. The opening ceremony was attended by Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris and members of Abbott's leadership team.
