Abbott Laboratories has inaugurated a new research and development center in Shanghai, China, representing an investment of over $30 million. The 5,000-square-meter facility is designed to address the evolving health and lifestyle needs of the local population.
The new center consolidates R&D operations for Abbott's nutrition and diagnostics divisions under one roof, previously conducted in separate rented spaces. The facility aims to develop science-based products tailored to local consumer preferences and health requirements.
Within the nutrition segment, scientists will focus on creating products for infants, children, and aging adults. The diagnostics team will concentrate on research and development for diseases prevalent in China, including infectious diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions.
Abbott is also establishing a customer experience center across from the R&D facility. This initiative is intended to support innovation in the country and facilitate collaborations with local partners.
