Abbott receives CE Mark for dual glucose and ketone sensor

Abbott has received regulatory approval for the Libre Duo system, the first wearable technology capable of tracking both glucose and ketone levels simultaneously. The device aims to provide early detection of rising ketone levels, which can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening complication for individuals with diabetes.

The system replaces the need for frequent manual blood or urine testing, instead providing continuous data streams. According to clinical data, the ability to monitor ketones alongside glucose is critical, as ketone levels can fluctuate independently of glucose levels. This capability aligns with recent international consensus guidance on the management of Type 1 diabetes.

Abbott plans to roll out the sensors, available in 10-day and 15-day versions, across select European markets later this year. The technology is designed for compatibility with existing digital health platforms and is currently being adapted for integration with automated insulin delivery (AID) systems.
