Abbott releases guidance on diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms and monitoring

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs when a severe lack of insulin prevents glucose from entering cells, forcing the body to break down fat for energy. This process releases ketones into the bloodstream, leading to dangerous levels of acidity. The condition is a recognized emergency that can lead to coma or death if not addressed promptly.

Key symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and rapid breathing. While DKA is more prevalent in Type 1 diabetes, it can affect individuals with Type 2 diabetes as well. Medical experts advise that DKA can even occur in cases where glucose levels appear near normal, known as euglycemic DKA.

Technological developments in glucose monitoring are shifting toward continuous data. Abbott recently received CE Mark approval for its Libre Duo sensor, which is designed to monitor both glucose and ketones continuously. The company aims to move away from reactive, manual testing methods, though the system is not yet available for purchase in the U.S. or other markets.

Patients are advised to consult with healthcare providers to establish a specific plan for ketone monitoring. Immediate medical evaluation is required if DKA symptoms present, as hospital-based treatment involving IV fluids and insulin is typically necessary to stabilize the patient.
