Abbott Resumes Similac Production at Sturgis Facility

Abbott Laboratories has resumed production of its Similac infant formula at its Sturgis, Michigan facility, according to a company statement released Friday. Abbott estimates it will take approximately six weeks for the product to reach retail locations, factoring in production ramp-up, enhanced testing protocols, and distribution logistics.

Production of EleCare specialty formula and certain metabolic formulas had previously restarted at the Sturgis plant starting July 1 and early August, respectively, with shipments expected in the coming weeks. Robert B. Ford, Abbott's chairman and CEO, stated that while restarting Similac production is a milestone, the company remains focused on restoring product availability. He emphasized a commitment to quality and safety to re-earn the trust of parents and healthcare providers.

Abbott has also increased overall infant formula supply to the U.S. through various means. In August, the company expected to supply over eight million pounds of formula, exceeding August 2021 volumes. This includes increased production from its facilities in Ohio and Arizona, imports from its FDA-registered plant in Ireland, and supply from its plant in Granada, Spain, in collaboration with the FDA.

To support participants in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, Abbott is extending previously offered rebates on competitive products through October 31, 2022, in states where Abbott holds the contract and Similac is unavailable. This initiative aims to ensure continued access to high-quality, safe formula for eligible families.
