Abbott trains physicians for more diverse cardiovascular research
Abbott Laboratories has launched a new training program to support under-represented physicians in cardiovascular research. The initiative aims to increase diversity among participants in clinical trials.

Abbott Park, Ill. – Abbott Laboratories has introduced a new physician training program designed to enhance diversity within cardiovascular research. In partnership with Women as One, the initiative focuses on training women, Black, and Hispanic male physicians to foster greater participation from under-represented groups in clinical trials.
Evidence suggests significant underrepresentation in cardiovascular trials among specific demographics. Studies show women comprising only 34% of participants, Black individuals less than 8%, and Hispanic individuals approximately 5%. This disparity can impact the effectiveness and applicability of treatments and research findings across diverse patient populations.
The CLIMB Research Skills training program, running through 2022, aims to equip participants with the foundational skills needed for clinical trial research and facilitate networking with industry experts. A key objective is to build trust in physicians and the clinical trial process, while improving understanding and access for these demographic groups.
Abbott has allocated an additional $150,000 to support the CLIMB program, contributing to a larger commitment of $5 million since 2021. These funds will support scholarships for medical studies at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), bolster a Diversity in Research Medical Advisory Board, and drive more diverse enrollment in Abbott's own trials.
