Abbott's FreeStyle Libre 2 System Achieves High Accuracy for Pediatric Diabetes Management

Abbott Laboratories has expanded the use of its FreeStyle Libre 2 glucose monitoring system to include adults and children aged 4 and older with diabetes. The system features a sensor worn for 14 days, providing minute-by-minute glucose readings with what the company states is unsurpassed accuracy compared to other integrated continuous glucose monitors (iCGM) on the market.

The technology aims to eliminate the need for painful fingersticks. Introduced with optional real-time alarms, the system is designed to help caregivers anticipate and respond to glucose level fluctuations. According to Abbott, the FreeStyle Libre 2 system also produces one-third fewer false alarms for children compared to competing iCGMs. The discreet sensor, worn on the back of the arm, can be scanned through clothing, an advancement intended to reduce the stigma associated with diabetes management, particularly for adolescents.

Abbott attributes the system's accuracy to a combination of advanced sensor technology and algorithms, which enables factory calibration. This approach is intended to reduce reliance on manual calibration using fingersticks, which can be burdensome and increase the risk of inaccurate readings. The company emphasizes that accuracy is critical for effective diabetes management, allowing users to identify patterns in glucose levels and intervene earlier in cases of dangerously high or low glucose readings.
