Abbott's FreeStyle Libre 2 System Connects to Smartphones

Abbott Laboratories announced that its FreeStyle Libre 2 continuous glucose monitoring (iCGM) system is now connectable to compatible iPhone and Android smartphones. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared new mobile applications that streamline diabetes management by providing real-time data directly to the user's phone.

The new apps enable users to check their glucose values and trend arrows with a simple scan. The system also displays an 8-hour historical graph showing glucose level fluctuations influenced by food, exercise, and other factors. This digital solution aims to make diabetes monitoring more effortless and integrated into daily life, leveraging the ubiquity and user-friendliness of smartphones.

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system utilizes a small sensor applied to the back of the upper arm, measuring glucose levels every minute for up to 14 days. Users can then scan the sensor with their compatible smartphone to receive immediate glucose information. Abbott has consistently focused on improving its system, with the latest app integrations representing an ongoing effort in this development.

Globally, approximately 3.5 million users rely on the FreeStyle Libre system for their diabetes management.
