Abbott's FreeStyle Libre System Benefits Confirmed by New Data

Abbott Laboratories, a U.S.-based healthcare company, has presented new research data highlighting the benefits of its FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system. The findings, presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 80th Scientific Sessions in June 2020, indicate that the system offers advantages to individuals managing diabetes, irrespective of their treatment regimen.

The data revealed a significant reduction in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels among people with type 2 diabetes using the FreeStyle Libre system. These reductions were found to be comparable to those typically observed when insulin therapy is initiated. Notably, patients with type 2 diabetes not using insulin experienced the most substantial decreases in HbA1c.

Furthermore, the study indicated that users of the FreeStyle Libre system experienced fewer diabetes-related complications and hospitalizations, particularly among those with type 2 diabetes not on intensive insulin therapy. The findings suggest that CGM technology can contribute to improved glucose management without necessarily requiring additional insulin.

Abbott Laboratories emphasizes that wearable glucose monitors like FreeStyle Libre empower individuals to track their glucose trends, make informed decisions, and better manage their condition. The company asserts that CGM data can benefit all individuals with diabetes, providing valuable insights for glucose understanding and management, regardless of their treatment type.
