Abbott's Leadless Pacemaker Allows Professional Surfer to Resume Career

Professional surfer Mikey DeTemple, who faced limitations due to heart block, can now pursue his sport without previous technical hindrances, thanks to Abbott Laboratories' AVEIR DR leadless pacemaker system. The system was implanted in February 2025, offering a renewed opportunity for DeTemple's athletic career.

DeTemple was diagnosed at age 11 with third-degree heart block, a condition causing a slow heart rhythm. While he initially lived a normal life, he eventually required a pacemaker. His first traditional pacemaker was implanted at 19. Over time, he experienced recurring issues with these pacemakers and their leads, which conflicted with his demanding surfing career. Lead fractures and frequent surgeries for replacements kept him out of the water for extended periods, hindering his ability to paddle and compete.

"Every time you go to do something you love, you’re actually destroying yourself," DeTemple stated, likening his situation to the persistent frustration of waiting for a perfect wave only to be knocked down. After years of searching for a better solution, he found a new option: Abbott's AVEIR DR leadless pacemaker system, which received FDA approval in 2023.

The AVEIR DR system is the first FDA-approved dual-chamber leadless pacemaker system. This technology, designed without traditional leads, has freed DeTemple from the pain and limitations previously associated with his surfing. He can now fully engage in his passion without physical obstructions.
