Abbott's Libre Assist Aids Meal Decisions for People With Diabetes
Abbott's new Libre Assist app feature helps predict and understand meal impacts on glucose before eating. It provides a color-coded prediction and personalized tips.

Abbott Laboratories has launched Libre Assist, a new feature integrated into its Libre app. This tool is designed to assist individuals with diabetes in making more informed food choices by predicting the potential impact of meals on glucose levels.
Libre Assist analyzes a meal through either a user-submitted photo or a text description. It then provides an easy-to-understand, color-coded assessment of the meal's impact: green for minor, yellow for moderate, and orange for major glucose impact. If the prediction indicates a moderate or significant effect, the app offers personalized tips to help manage the glucose response.
The feature can leverage data from Abbott's FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems. Three hours after the meal, Libre Assist compares the prediction with actual glucose data, confirming the meal's real-world impact and aiding in future understanding of food effects.
Sunny Nagra, a product expert in Abbott's diabetes care business, highlighted that Libre Assist marks a significant advancement over traditional food-logging apps, which typically offer insights only after a meal has been consumed. The feature is accessible through the Libre app, available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
