Abbott's MitraClip Device Treats Over 30,000 Patients Worldwide
Abbott Laboratories announced its MitraClip device has successfully treated over 30,000 patients with mitral regurgitation globally, offering a minimally invasive alternative to surgery.

Chicago, IL – Abbott Laboratories reported that its MitraClip device has been used to treat over 30,000 patients suffering from mitral regurgitation in 40 countries. Mitral regurgitation occurs when the heart's mitral valve does not close properly, leading to a backward flow of blood.
The MitraClip device provides a treatment option that repairs the valve through a catheter-based procedure, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery. This approach is particularly beneficial for patients who may be at higher risk from traditional surgical interventions.
Originally developed by Evalve Inc., which Abbott acquired in 2009, the MitraClip concept emerged in the late 1990s. The journey from initial idea to clinical application involved extensive research and development, culminating in the first patient treatment in 2003.
The development team, comprised of researchers, scientists, and cardiologists, focused on creating a device capable of clipping the mitral valve leaflets together to reduce leakage. This required overcoming significant technical challenges in catheter-based delivery and device functionality.
With over 30,000 successful treatments, MitraClip has become an established option for managing mitral regurgitation, improving quality of life for many patients worldwide.
