ABDA Advises Pharmacy Consultations Ahead of Heatwave

The German Association of Pharmacists (ABDA) has issued guidance for managing health during anticipated heatwaves. The organization strongly recommends that individuals on long-term medication consult their local pharmacies to ensure their treatment remains appropriate and safe.

High temperatures can alter how certain medications work, particularly transdermal patches. Increased blood flow at higher temperatures may lead to faster absorption of the active ingredient, potentially causing an unintended overdose. Pharmacists warn that this could dangerously reduce the respiratory reflex, and advise patients against self-adjusting dosages, urging them to seek professional advice first.

Heat also exacerbates dehydration. Medications like diuretics, often prescribed for blood pressure, can increase fluid loss. ABDA points out that this can lead to symptoms such as headaches and difficulty concentrating. Patients are encouraged to monitor their weight daily during heatwaves to manage hydration and consider electrolyte intake.

For those unable to leave their homes due to heat, many pharmacies offer delivery services. These services adhere to specific temperature control protocols during transport, ensuring the integrity of all medications, both refrigerated and non-refrigerated.
