ABDA: AI can support pharmacies, but not replace staff

The German Association of Pharmacists (ABDA) has outlined its position on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in pharmacies, emphasizing that while AI can provide valuable support, it should not replace the professional expertise and decision-making of pharmacy staff.

In a contribution to the "der freie beruf" magazine, Dr. Jan-Niklas Francke, a board member of both the German Association of Pharmacists (DAV) and the Federal Association of Liberal Professions (BFB), differentiated between the passive and active use of AI in pharmacies. Passive AI use, such as supporting back-office functions, is seen as a practical tool for daily operations. Active AI use, for instance, via chatbots to assist in patient communication, can query standard data and identify potential issues by analyzing large data pools.

However, Francke stressed that AI's language models are dependent on the quality of prompts and patient input. The ability to ask the right questions, make balanced decisions, and take responsibility for those decisions remains solely with pharmacists. AI can assist, but the ultimate decision must always rest with the pharmacist, utilizing their professional competence and experience to ensure patient care and safety.

ABDA's stance reflects a broader discussion on the role of AI in healthcare, where a balanced integration of technology and human expertise is considered crucial for maintaining the quality and safety of patient services. The association acknowledges the potential for digital tools like AI to enhance pharmacy operations and efficiency.
