AMK summarizes drug safety information updates from 2014
The German drug commission (AMK) has published a summary of its information bulletins from the latter half of 2014, detailing updates made to the safety information of various medicinal products. These changes align with recommendations from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).
The bulletins address several drug substances and their revised usage or warnings. For instance, bromocriptine-containing preparations for lactation suppression are now restricted to cases with compelling medical reasons. The product information for the antidepressant bupropion has been updated with a warning about potential effects on blood cells. Additionally, the product information for the sedative zolpidem includes more prominent warnings regarding risks of impaired reaction capacity.
Further updates concern chlorhexidine-based skin disinfectants, with new measures to prevent chemical burns in newborns recommended. The use of antibiotics such as colistin and colistimethate has also been subject to restrictions and clearer dosing instructions, including a shift to International Units for parenteral and inhaled solutions.
These updates, disseminated by ABDA, reflect a broader European effort to enhance drug safety. Regulatory agencies continuously monitor drug safety profiles, implementing necessary modifications to usage and information to minimize potential risks for patients.
