ABDA announces e-prescription rollout in Germany

Berlin – On June 4, 2021, the German Association of Pharmacists (ABDA) held a press conference themed "The e-prescription is coming!" in observance of the German Pharmacy Day. The event focused on the impending national rollout of the electronic prescription system.

The e-prescription is set to be implemented nationwide starting January 1, 2022, after an initial rollout in the Berlin-Brandenburg region on July 1, 2021. ABDA highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored existing deficits in healthcare digitalization, but progress is being made.

Results from a representative survey commissioned by ABDA and conducted by Kantar were presented. The survey aimed to gauge public awareness and attitudes towards the e-prescription, indicating a need for increased public information.

ABDA President Gabriele Regina Overwiening, along with other representatives, discussed the potential benefits and challenges of the e-prescription from the perspective of local pharmacies. The press conference emphasized the role of pharmacies in the German healthcare system and their commitment to patient care and information dissemination, particularly around the annual Pharmacy Day on June 7.
