ABDA Encourages Reporting of Drug Side Effects During MedSafetyWeek

The German Pharmacists' Association (ABDA) is emphasizing the critical role of reporting suspected drug side effects as part of the global MedSafetyWeek campaign. This annual initiative, running from November 6-12, 2023, involves over 80 countries aiming to raise awareness about medication safety.

This year's MedSafetyWeek theme, "Who can report?", highlights the contributions of healthcare professionals and patients in enhancing drug safety. ABDA is particularly focused on engaging pharmacists, as spontaneous reports from pharmacies provide valuable and reliable data for the early identification of potential drug risks. The organization stresses that the trusting relationship between pharmacists and patients is key to facilitating these reports.

ABDA recommends that pharmacists proactively inquire about their patients' tolerance to medication during consultations. They are encouraged to motivate patients to report any potential side effects experienced in relation to their medication. Furthermore, ABDA advises pharmacies to establish structured internal processes for documenting identified drug risks and to ensure all pharmaceutical staff are familiar with the accessible reporting system provided by the AMK (Arzneimittelkommission der deutschen Apotheker).

These reports are crucial for maintaining and improving medicinal product safety long-term. ABDA provides resources, including online forms and informational materials, to support pharmacies and patients in the reporting process. The ultimate goal is to enhance patient safety throughout the medication lifecycle.
