ABDA launches co-payment calculator for 2026

The German Pharmacists Association (ABDA) has introduced a new tool to assist patients in understanding their co-payment obligations. Accessible via the APONET consumer portal, the co-payment calculator (Zuzahlungsrechner) enables individuals to ascertain whether they qualify for an exemption from statutory co-payments for medications and other healthcare services for the calendar year 2026.

Co-payment exemptions are valid only for the respective calendar year. Therefore, a new application to the health insurance fund is required for an exemption for 2026. ABDA emphasizes that proof of exemption must be presented at pharmacies and to physicians to be recognized for prescriptions and medication dispensing.

The new calculator aims to simplify the process for patients to check their eligibility and ensure they have the necessary documentation. It provides a clear method for individuals to understand the rules surrounding co-payments and potential exemptions.

ABDA reminds patients that any exemption obtained in a previous year expires at the end of December and a new application is necessary. Having the updated proof of exemption is crucial for the continued application of benefits throughout 2026.
