ABDA President Attends Launch of Health Ministry's Prevention Initiative
Thomas Preis, president of the German Pharmacists Association (ABDA), attended the launch of the German Federal Ministry of Health's (BMG) new prevention initiative on July 16, 2026.

Thomas Preis, president of the German Pharmacists Association (ABDA), participated in the launch of a new prevention initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) on July 16, 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen prevention and health promotion as a key pillar of the healthcare system and foster a lasting change in mindset towards preventing illnesses before they occur.
The initiative seeks to promote health and avert diseases before they emerge. At the launch event, Preis highlighted the crucial role of pharmacies in healthcare. "The health of our citizens is a matter of the heart for the 16,000 pharmacies and their dedicated teams," Preis stated. Pharmacies serve as vital contact points for approximately three million citizens daily regarding medications, health, and preventive care.
Moving forward, the ministry plans to collaborate with stakeholders to identify specific focus areas and action fields. This prevention initiative builds upon existing legislation and aims to advance its development. The goal is to better integrate current measures and permanently embed health promotion into people's daily lives.
ABDA has pledged its support for the initiative's progression. "Pharmacists are ready to take on greater responsibility in primary care, prevention, and health promotion, and to actively shape the necessary changes alongside other healthcare professionals, politicians, and society," Preis affirmed.
