ABDA Reports Widespread Media Coverage for "Against Future Theft" Initiative

The German Pharmacists Association (ABDA) has announced substantial media coverage for its "Against Future Theft" (Gegen Zukunftsklau) initiative. The campaign aims to draw attention to the increasingly difficult financial circumstances faced by pharmacies, which ABDA argues poses a threat to future healthcare provision.

On June 6, the main German news program "Tagesschau" featured a report on the launch of the initiative. The broadcast included an interview with a Berlin-based pharmacist who described rising personnel and energy costs juxtaposed with stagnant pharmacy fees. ABDA President Gabriele Regina Overwiening cautioned that "pharmacies are bleeding out" and stressed their essential role in local healthcare, calling for adequate political compensation.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, when questioned by "Tagesschau," expressed a cautious stance regarding increased financial compensation alone. He emphasized the need to maintain the attractiveness of the pharmacy profession through measures such as reduced bureaucracy and improved remuneration for pharmacists' services, including health counseling and preventative care, beyond just dispensing medication. Lauterbach stated that the profession should be valued more highly, but that the issue is not solely about money.

In addition to "Tagesschau," news agencies dpa and AFP, Deutschlandfunk radio, and ARD's capital city studio have also covered the press conference and the initiative. Major newspapers including "Die ZEIT," "Die WELT," and "SPIEGEL Online," as well as BR Fernsehen, have reported on the initiative and its background, including the planned protest day on June 14.
