Accel Partner Subrata Mitra Releases Book on Founders' Survival Strategies
Venture capitalist Subrata Mitra has launched a new book detailing the journeys of founders who have faced significant setbacks, emphasizing survival and repositioning in the face of technological shifts like AI.

Subrata Mitra, a veteran partner at venture capital firm Accel, has released "Down But Not Out" (HarperCollins, 2026), a book co-authored with Pankaj Mishra. The work features 10 stories of startup founders who have navigated considerable challenges and failures, focusing on their resilience and ability to persevere.
Mitra's book highlights the importance of survival and repositioning in entrepreneurship. His own career includes notable setbacks, such as shutting down a company following the fallout from the 9/11 attacks, before his involvement in co-founding Flipkart and building Accel into a leading early-stage investment firm in India.
The book's release comes as the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence begins to reshape various industries. Mitra has observed that the rise of AI is sidelining potentially profitable businesses that may struggle to scale as they once did. He intends for the founder stories to offer lessons and inspiration to others facing similar entrepreneurial hurdles.
Mitra uses cricket as a metaphor for the founders' journeys, focusing on those who remain in the game despite adversity, rather than solely on rapid success stories. "Down But Not Out" was launched in late June and provides an in-depth look at the challenges and endurance required in the startup world.
