Activision anticipates GTA 6 will boost Call of Duty franchise

Activision believes the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 could increase player numbers and industry attention, benefiting its own Call of Duty series. The company expects the two major releases to stimulate broader market growth.

Video game publisher Activision expects the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) to benefit, rather than detract from, its own Call of Duty franchise.

Tyler Bahl, Activision's Chief Marketing Officer, stated that both GTA 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are poised to be among the largest game releases in 2026. He anticipates that GTA 6's release will encourage more players to return to gaming and elevate overall interest in the industry, creating opportunities for Call of Duty.

In an interview with The Game Business, Bahl addressed concerns that concurrent releases of major titles like GTA 6 might fragment player attention. He argued that the increased buzz around GTA 6 could prompt players to power up their consoles and engage with gaming more broadly, indirectly benefiting the entire sector, including Call of Duty.

Bahl highlighted that Call of Duty's enduring appeal stems not only from its combat mechanics but also from its social features. User research indicates that playing with friends and spending social time in-game are key priorities for players, with cross-platform multiplayer serving as a significant differentiator.

Activision acknowledged that recent entries in the Call of Duty series had not fully met player expectations. The company plans to introduce a new sub-series within Call of Duty to address the demand for fresh experiences. Modern Warfare 4 is being developed with player feedback in mind to incorporate desired changes in gameplay and style.
