Born in 1933, Benchang gained widespread recognition for his compelling performance as the eccentric monk Ji Gong in the 1985 television series. This role became his signature, leading him to create many beloved characters throughout his extensive career in theater and television.
Benchang began his acting journey in 1951 with the Nanjing Cultural Troupe. Following the success of "Ji Gong," he established the Beijing Benchang Art Communication Center in 1994, where he served as director and lead actor for the television series "Ji Gong You Ji."
More recently, in 2023, Benchang garnered significant acclaim for his role as "Uncle" in Wong Kar-wai's drama series "Blossoms Shanghai." His performance as a business mentor and strategist was widely praised and introduced his talent to a new generation of viewers.
