Actress Wu Yue's AI-generated fake endorsement video leads to account ban

Chinese actress Wu Yue exposed an AI-generated fake endorsement video using her likeness, prompting WeChat's video platform to permanently ban the offending account.

Chinese actress Wu Yue has revealed that a WeChat video account, "Flower Sister Beauty Diary," utilized artificial intelligence to create a fraudulent endorsement video featuring her. The incident has resulted in the permanent closure of the account and the deletion of its content.

Wu Yue provided evidence showing the account had employed AI to generate a video that manipulated her image and voice. The content depicted an AI version of the actress endorsing products, allegedly using footage from her public appearances. The synthesized audio portrayed "Wu Yue" praising a product, falsely claiming she initiated the collaboration.

Representatives from the WeChat team confirmed to The Paper that the account has been permanently suspended and all associated content removed. This action follows a broader crackdown by Chinese internet regulators on deceptive practices and identity manipulation in short-form video content.

China's Cyberspace Administration (CAC) recently launched a two-month campaign targeting "false persona chaos" on short video platforms. The initiative specifically aims to combat the misuse of AI for impersonation, including the creation of fake audio-visual content to misrepresent public figures for unauthorized endorsements and marketing purposes.
