ACV Warns of Increased Risk of Wildlife Collisions in Autumn

ACV Automobil-Club Verkehr has issued a warning regarding the heightened risk of wildlife collisions during autumn, citing shorter days and increased animal activity. The risk is particularly elevated during twilight hours, which often coincide with peak commuting times.

Statistically, autumn and spring are the most dangerous seasons for wildlife accidents, coinciding with periods of heightened animal activity as they search for food and shelter. According to the German Hunting Association (DJV), approximately 3,000 people are injured annually in such incidents. In 2022, German automotive insurers recorded around 265,000 wildlife collisions, resulting in damages exceeding €950 million.

The ACV emphasizes that animals do not observe traffic rules. A collision with a red deer at 60 km/h generates an impact force equivalent to five tons, comparable to the weight of an adult elephant, illustrating the potential severity of such encounters.

The automobile club advises drivers to exercise heightened vigilance during dusk, dawn, and periods of poor visibility, particularly between 6-8 AM and 5-8 PM. Areas bordering forests and unfamiliar roads are identified as high-risk zones. Reducing speed and avoiding high beams when spotting animals are crucial. Drivers should also anticipate that wildlife often travels in groups.

ACV reminds drivers that in the event of a collision, remaining calm is paramount. Activating hazard lights, donning a high-visibility vest, and deploying a warning triangle are essential immediate steps. In case of personal injury, first aid should be administered, and emergency services contacted. All collisions should be reported to the police or a hunter to facilitate insurance claims.
