ADAC and Autobahn GmbH Test New Traffic Safety Systems
ADAC and Autobahn GmbH have initiated a collaboration to test new cooperative intelligent transport systems in Germany. The objective is to enhance traffic safety and reduce congestion and emissions.
Automobile club ADAC and Autobahn GmbH have launched a collaboration to test cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) across Germany. The initiative aims to improve road safety and decrease traffic jams and emissions through digital information exchange.
Autobahn GmbH previously introduced a C-ITS service called "Baustellenwarner" (construction site warning), which is now being rolled out nationwide. This system enables vehicles to digitally share information about hazardous situations, such as obstacles, traffic jams, icy conditions, or aquaplaning, thereby enhancing safety for all road users.
As part of this project, ADAC is equipping its roadside assistance vehicles with Car2X technology. These vehicles, fitted with a WLAN communication unit, can alert surrounding vehicles to potential hazards like work zones or breakdown sites up to 800 meters away. This functionality is particularly relevant in conditions of poor visibility or near curves.
The nationwide deployment of this technology commenced in late October in Erkner, Brandenburg. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Volker Wissing and ADAC's Technology President Karsten Schulze attended the launch event. Karsten Schulze stated the shared vision is to leverage technological advancements to make traffic safer, smoother, and more environmentally friendly.
