Adobe and WhatsApp Integrate PDF Annotation Tools

Adobe and WhatsApp have partnered to introduce a new feature enabling users to view and annotate PDF files directly within WhatsApp Web and the Windows desktop application. This integration eliminates the need to download documents for review or editing and is rolling out globally in phases.

When a PDF is shared in a WhatsApp chat, recipients can now open the file inline, scroll through pages, and zoom without leaving the conversation. Integrated Acrobat tools allow users to highlight text, strike through lines, or draw directly on the document before sending feedback back via chat. The feature supports password-protected PDFs, prompting for the password before opening.

Files remain protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption, limiting access to chat participants. The integration does not support full document editing; users can comment and review but cannot alter original text or page layout. For more comprehensive editing, users can select "Edit in Acrobat" to open the file in Adobe's full web application.

Basic viewing and annotation tools are free, while advanced editing features and Adobe's AI Assistant, which can summarize documents, require a paid Acrobat subscription. This collaboration is part of Adobe's broader strategy to embed its tools into platforms users already frequent.
